Fiqh of eid 9: Id Khutbah is after Id Salah

1) This is based upon the hadith by Ibn abbas who narrates "I attented Id payer with the Prophet (peace be upon him) , Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and all of them would pray before the Khutbah" [Bukhari and Muslim]

2) Imam tirmidhi says "This is the acceptable practice among the people of knowledge amonsgt the companions and others that the Id prayer precedes the Khutbah" [Sunan at-tirmdhi 2:411]

3) Listening to the Khutbah is not wajib and this is based on the hadith by Abdullah bin Saib who narrates that he attended the Id prayer with the Prophet (peace be upon him) and when he finished the prayer he said: "We shall have a Khutbah- so let whoever wishes to sit for the Khutnah do so and whoever wishes to leave leave"

Fiqh of eid 8: Description of eid prayer

‎1) Two rakah based upon the hadith by Umar (r) who narrates "The adha prayer is 2 rakah, the fitr prayer is 2 rakah" [Subul as salam 2:67]

2) Intention

3) Takbir ul ihram with opening supplication

4) Additional takbirs of 7 in the first rakah and 5 in the second rakahThis is based upon the hadith of Aisha (r): "The prophet (peace be upon him) would say takbir in both fitr and adha-seven in the first five in the second"[Abu dawud/Ahmad/Ibn majah and Bayhaqi- isnad sahih]

Imam baghawi says "This is the opinion of most of the people of knowledge among the companions and those after it-before reciting quran-in the first rakah of the eid prayer-seven in the first other than the opening takbir and five in the second." [Sharh us sunnah 4:309]

One should raise the hands with each takbir although Imam albani says there is no authentic proof and also should not raise the voices with each takbir behind the imam.

Imam ibn qayyim says howvever "Ibn umar used to adhere closely to the sunnah so he used to raise his hands with each takbir" [Zaad al maad 1:441]

5) Fatiha

6) Remainder of the pater is same as any other sala

Fiqh of eid 7: NO adhan or Iqama

1) This is based on the hadith from jabir bin sumrah who reports "I prayed Id prayer with the messenger (peace be upon him) on more than one occasion without adhan or iqamah" [Muslim]

2) Ibn Abbas and jabir narrate "Adhan was never given on the day of fitr and adha" [ Bukhari]

3) Imam ibn qayyim says "He (peace be upon him) would arrive at the musalla and start the prayer without adhan or iaqama or announcing congregation for prayer. The sunnah is not to do any of that" [Zaad al maad 1:442]

Fiqh of eid 6: NO prayer before or after eid

‎1) This is based on the narration by Ibn abbas "The prophet (peace be upon him) went of his house on the day of fitr prayed two rakah and did not pray before or after it" [Al Bukhari]

2) Imam ibn qayyim says "Neither he (peace be upon him) nor his companions prayed when they arrived at the musalla-before the prayer or after it" [Zaad al maad 2:443]

3) Imam ibn hajar says "There is no confirmed sunnah prayer before or after id prayer-contrary to those compare it to jumaah prayer" [Fath ul bari 2:476]

what about 2 rakah upon entering the masjid before the eid pray?

Very good question

1) Abu said al khudri narrates: "The prophet (peace be upon him) would not pray at all before the id prayer but when returned to his house he prayed" [Musnad Ahmad and Ibn Majah- isnad hasan by Imam albani]

2) Commenting on this hadith Imam albani says "The negation of praying before and after the id prayers refers only praying at the MUSALLA" [Irwa Ghalil 3:100]

3) So basically Sheikh Muhammad al jibali says in Iyad fil islam "No sunnah prayer before or after Id paryer except if performed in a masjid instead of a musalla in which case one must pray two rakah before sitting down" [Iyyad fil islam page 25]

Fiqh of eid 5: Id greetings

‎1) Jubair bin Nufair said "When the companions met on the day of eid they would say to each other "Taqaballa illahu minna wa mink (May Allah accept from us and you)" [Al-Mahamliyyat with Isnad Hasan according to Imam hajar]

Fiqh of eid 4: Takbir تكبيرات العيد during the two ids

أكبر الله أكبر الله أكبر __ لا إله إلا الله __ الله أكبر الله أكبر ولله الحمد

Allahu Akbar_Allahu Akbar_Allahu Akbar_La'ilaha illah Allahu Akbar_Allahu Akbar_Allahu Akbar_walillahilhamd.

1) Takbir (saying Allah Akbar) is clearly a distinctive feature of Muslims celebrating id. It is based upon the ayah of the Quran "And that you must exclaim Allahs greatness for having guided you so that you may be grateful" [2:185]

2) Takbir starts from the time you leave the house based upon the hadith "The Prophet (peace be upon him) would leave his house on the day of fitr and say takbir until he reached the musalla" [Musanaf ibn shaybah]

3) The wording of Takbir are many but the a popular one is:

Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar La ilaha illa lah Allahu abar Allahu akbar wa lillahil-hamd

[Musnanaf ibn Shaybah 2:168- Isnad sahih by Sheikh Halabi]

4) Imam albani says "There is evidence that the takbir should be said allowed on route to the musalla.....saying the takbir in unionson is not permissible" [Al Sahiha 1:121]

Fiqh of eid 3: To go early to pray at musalla by walking there with different routes

‎1a) To pray at the musalla (outdoors) is sunnah and is based upon the hadith of said al-khudri "The prophet (peace be upon him) used to got on the day of fitr and adha to the musulla and the first thing he did when he reached there was to perform the prayer" [Al Bukhari]

1b) Imam ibn hajj al-maliki says "The established sunnah for the prayer of the two eids is to be held in the musalla" [Al Madkhal 2:283]

2a) To take different routes is based upon the hadith narrated by Jabir r) who reported "The prophet (peace be upon him) would take different routes on the day of eid" [Al Bukahri in Mualiq form]

2b) Imam ibn qayyim says "He would take different routes on the day of eid... the wisdom behind this is to greet the people of both routes, so that people of both routes receive blessings from him, to fufill the needs of both routes and to display takbir" [zaad al maad]

3) Ali (r) reports "It is part of the sunnah that you got to the Id walking"

Fiqh of eid 2: To eat after eid-ul-adha salah

‎1) This is based upon the hadith of buraydah (r) who narrated that "Prophet (peace be upon him) would not leave his house on the day of fitr until he ate. On the day of nahr (sacrifice) he would not eat until he returned so that he would eat from his sacrifice" [Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah: Isnad hasan]

2) Imam shawkani says: "The wisdom in delaying eating other day of Adha is that it is a day on which it is legislated to offer sacrifices and to eat from them. Thus it is recommend for one to eat from his sacrifice on breakfast. This was mentioned by ibn qudamah" [Nayl awtar 3:357]

Fiqh of Eid 1: To Take Ghusl and Beautify onself

‎A.
1) To take a ghusl on the day of Eid is based upon the hadith of ibn umar (r) that he used to take a ghusl on the day of fitr before precedding to the musalla (Muwata imam Malik/Musnad Shafi/Mussanaf Razaq- Isnad Sahih)

2) Imam ibn Qudamah says "It is recommend to perform ghusl for Id. Ibn Umar would perform ghusl on the day of fitr and Ali is reported to have done so aswell" [Al Mughni 2:370]

3) Sheikh Jibali says that all reports regarding prophet (peace be upon him) taking a ghusl on the day of eid are weak rather we rely on the pratice of the sahaba and tabieen which has preceeded [Al Iyad fil islam 2:7]

B.
‎1) To beautify yourself is based upon the hadith of ibn umar (r) in sahih bukhari

2) Imam sindhi says "The hadith proves dressing up for Id days was acceptable custom among the companions and the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not object to it" [Hashiyah sunan nasai 3:181]

3) Imam Ibn qudamah says "The hadith indicted beautify oneself on the occasion was common among them (sahaha). I herd people of knowledge express the desirability of perfume and beautification for every eid" [Al mughni 2:228]

4) Imam ibn qayyim says "The prophet (peace be upon him) would wear his best clothes-he had a cloak that he wore specifically for the two eids and jummah" [Zaad al maad 1:441]

10 Zil Hajj / 17 Nov 2010

May Allah Ta'al blessyou all with a beautiful, memorable and spiritual Eid Ul Adha. Ameen.

Volume 7, Book 68, Number 453:

Narrated Al-Bara:

The Prophet said (on the day of Idal-Adha), "The first thing we will do on this day of ours, is to offer the ('Id) prayer and then return to slaughter the sacrifice. Whoever does so, he acted according to our Sunna (tradition), and whoever slaughtered (the sacrifice) before the prayer, what he offered was just meat he presented to his family, and that will not be considered as Nusak (sacrifice)." (On hearing that) Abu Burda bin Niyar got up, for he had slaughtered the sacrifice before the prayer, and said, "I have got a six month old ram." The Prophet said, 'Slaughter it (as a sacrifice) but it will not be sufficient for any-one else (as a sacrifice after you). Al-Bara' added: The Prophet said, "Whoever slaughtered (the sacrifice) after the prayer, he slaughtered it at the right time and followed the tradition of the Muslims."

Volume 7, Book 68, Number 467:

Narrated Al-Bara':

I heard the Prophet delivering a sermon, and he said (on the Day of 'Id-Allah. a), "The first thing we will do on this day of ours is that we will offer the 'Id prayer, then we will return and slaughter our sacrifices; and whoever does so, then indeed he has followed our tradition, and whoever slaughtered his sacrifice (before the prayer), what he offered was just meat that he presented to his family, and that was not a sacrifice." Abu Burda got up and said, "O Allah's Apostle! I slaughtered the sacrifice before the prayer and I have got a Jadha'a which is better than an old sheep." The Prophet said, "Slaughter it to make up for that, but it will not be sufficient for anybody else after you."

1st 9 days of Zil Hajj

The Prophet swallahoualaiyhi wasalam said: When you see the new moon of Dhu?l-Hijjah, if any one of you wants to offer a sacrifice, then he should stop cutting his hair and nails until he has offered his sacrifice.

According to another report he said: He should not remove (literally, touch) anything from his hair or skin.

Among the good deeds which the Muslim should strive to do during the first ten days of Dhu?l-Hijjah is:-Fasting.

It is Sunnah to fast on the ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah, because the Prophet urged us to do good deeds during this time, and fasting is one of the best of deeds. The Prophet used to fast on the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah. Hunaydah ibn Khalid reported from his wife that some of the wives of the Prophet said: ?The Prophet used to fast on the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah, on the day of Aashooraa, on three days of each month, and on Mondays and Thursdays of each month.

hadeeth about hajj

Narrated Abu Huraira (R.A):

The Prophet محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم was asked, "Which is the best deed?"

He said, "To believe in Allah and His Apostle."

He was then asked, "Which is the next (in goodness)?"

He said, "To participate in Jihad in Allah's Cause."

He was then asked, "Which is the next?"

He said, "To perform Hajj−Mabrur. "

(Sahih Bukhari,chapter 2, hadith no 594)

Fasting on the day of Arafah

Fasting on the day of ‘Arafah is a confirmed Sunnah for those who are not performing Hajj.

It was narrated from Abu Qataadah (ra) that the Messenger of Allaah (saw) was asked about fasting on the day of ‘Arafah and he said: “It expiates for the past and coming years.”

(Muslim1162).
